Equipment
Gear
- Sturdy Leather or Gore-Tex Hiking Boots (NOT trail shoes) - with minimum of 20 days of hiking prior to Kili in same boots
- 25 - 30 Liter size Daypack with padded hip belt – lined with a garbage bag
- Sleeping Bag rated to between –10 and -20 degrees Celsius
- Thermarest Sleeping Pad
- Collapsible Seat rig for Thermarest (optional, chairs provided in dining tent)
- Sunglasses meant for climbing at altitude (100% UVA/UVB, low visible/blue light, with side shields and a string)
- Sun cream/Lip balm (SPF 15 minimum)
- 1L Nalgene Water bottle – insulated, 1 platypus with holder
- Three-section collapsible hiking poles
- Headlamp (quality type - Petzl), lightweight
- Spare batteries for headlamp - if using “AA” batteries, get lithium for summit day.
- Pocket Knife, 4 stuff sacks, 4 garbage bags, something to make a pillow with
- Camera/lenses/film/spare batteries for camera (brought from North America)
- Journal/book for reading
- Toilet Paper and antibacterial “Purell” hand wash, pee bottle (optional)
- Handi-wipes (Kilimanjaro is a dry & dusty mountain, these wipes are useful)
- Small quick dry towel and soap and shampoo, nail clippers
- Ziploc bags, 2 snacks/day (chocolate), drink mix (Gatorade), lots of hard candies
- Personal Medications/First Aid (blister kit, Band-Aids, etc.), Vaseline, hot shots
- Medications - Tylenol/Ibuprofen, Cipro
Clothing
- Toque or warm hat
- Sun hat and bandana
- 4 Bottom Layers: synthetic long johns, synthetic pants for hiking, fleece or wool pant, gore-tex rain pant (shorts are optional)
- 5 Top Layers: long sleeved light colour synthetic shirt for sun, medium weight synthetic shirt, pile jacket, down jacket or vest, gore-tex rain jacket
- Fleece mitts or gloves with wind covers
- Liner gloves
- Rain poncho (optional)
- Gaiters for mud
- Underwear (women can use panty liners)
- Three sets of hiking sock combinations; liners plus wool socks
- Camp shoes such as runners
